Do you have something you’d like to share with History Connect members and a broader range of public? We invite submissions from historians, with preference to postgraduates and early-career scholars. Our guidelines are as follows:
What We Accept
- We accept articles that should substantively address the nexus of topics related to history from different structures, scopes, scales, and time periods. Original and unique content is preferred.
- You can present your preferable format: book reviews, researcher interviews, oral histories, and research visualizations.
- By submitting an article the author gives History Connect permission to publish the article on the Web, without restriction, all worldwide rights, title, and interest in and to the article. If your article has been previously published, we will consider republishing as long as (a) the author controls or can arrange the necessary rights to reuse the content indefinitely with any existing copyright holder. Lengths, Style, and Format
- As a general rule, you should only write about topics on which you have demonstrated expertise and research.
- Three types of submission: Research Notes, Review, and Blog.
- Research Notes: These are based on your research. These notes are not expected to be full-length articles, but easily digestible for a general audience. Expected word length: 1,000-1,600 words (an article that exceeds the word count may be considered on special circumstances).
- Review: Articles about current books, archives, collections, and other material relevant to history range between 600 to 1,200 words.
- Blog: These pieces investigate current events using a historical lens. Accessible and journalistic in style, a blog piece provides a commentary without the use of academic jargon. Word count range from 600 to 1,000 words.
- You may include a list of three or five articles or books (preferably those that are available online) at the end of an article as recommended further reading. These may include your own previously published work, if relevant.
- Avoid footnotes, endnotes or reference lists unless those are imperative. If necessary, mention important sources in journalistic style within the text of the article, giving the author’s full name along with the source title, date, and publisher (e.g., “according to a study by Dudley Kirk…”). Use hyperlinks to link to sources for reference.
- Send illustrations as JPG, PNG or TIF files, if possible along with a detailed caption and credit information. Illustrations will be included at the discretion of the editor and maybe cropped to fit our page template.
- Author Byline: A one- to two-sentence biographical statement at the end of the text. If you wish to link to your website, blog, email or other social media profile, please identify those links here.
How to Submit
- Send your writing through the “Submission Form” on the header side.
- The front-end submission process will enable writers to submit their articles without any hassles. You can easily write an article on the front-end submission pages. Submissions will automatically create a post with featured images in “pending.” Our editorial board can review the writing for fact-finding before it appears on the site.
- Or, send your article by email to History Connect at firstname.lastname@example.org and attach your article in any current version of Microsoft Word or as plain‐text or rich‐text format (RTF) file
- History Connect will not send confirmation of every submission, but we will send you a link if your blog is published.
- What are your deadlines? We accept blog submissions on a rolling basis. You can write a post at your own pace. Editorial committees may establish their own schedule and deadlines.
- Can changes be made after the article is published? Yes, if you have minor edits, just let us know.

If authors choose to subsequently republish their contributions to History Connect in another medium, publication or venue, we ask that reference to the initial publication. All Articles submitted will be in Pending, and every submission will be reviewed by members of editorial board
